PONDA: Roy Naik, son of former chief minister Ravi Naik, has entered the fray for Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) elections on May 12.

When asked about his decision to contest the PMC polls, Naik said: “I decided to contest due to request from the people. Let’s bring some change.”

The battle for Ward 4 will take centre stage as Ravi Naik’s rival, Venkatesh Naik, had filed his nomination papers for Ward 4 on Wednesday, the same ward from where his son aspires to win.

“No, there is nothing political but it is the public demand which has inspired me to contest the election. At the moment, I won’t comment on winning or losing, as it will be decided by the people of the ward from where I will contest,” Roy replied to a question whether his candidature was politically motivated.

Venkatesh Naik was the PMC chairperson for a short term during the previous council term.

He enjoyed the support of the Congress-backed councillors, however he stepped down due to alleged disagreement between him and Ravi Naik.
