Major accident avoided as officials detect stones on railway tracks

PANJIM: Railway officials averted a major accident by detecting stones placed on the railway tracks at Tivim on Thursday. 

The police have arrested seven persons, including six juveniles, for the mischief that could have turned serious or fatal if any train had crossed the tracks. 

Soon after the matter was brought to the notice of Goa Police, SP Utkrisht Prasoon formed a team under Mapusa SDPO, and PI Tushar Lotlikar considering the seriousness of the incident, reported on Thursday evening. 

The team laid a trap in the area and apprehended all those involved. Out of the seven, six are aged between 15 and 17 years, while the seventh person is 18 years old. Mapusa police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of Railways Act against all accused. The minors have been sent to Apna Ghar while the accused, major in age, is in custody. 

All are residents of Volvolim, Tivim. Police said investigations revealed they had placed stones on tracks just for mischief to ‘record video/photo of what happens when a train passes over them’.
