MARGAO: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) has threatened of taking law into their hands if the schools and educational institutions and the areas around them are not made completely safe from dengue. The demand was made in the wake of the death of a student from Regina Mundi School in Vasco from dengue.
The NSUI handed a copy of their demand to the South Goa Collector earlier.
“A 6-year-old student died due to dengue outbreak near Regina Mundi School at Chicallim. Also 20 other students have been tested positive for dengue. This has happened because of the carelessness of the contractor whose work site has become the breeding ground,” alleged NSUI.
The contractor has left his work undone leading to water contamination around the school which boosted mosquito breeding and now it is the duty of the government to ensure the safety of people of Goa. We demand that the developer pays compensation to the 20 children as well as to the parents of the child who died as the incident of dengue cannot be taken lightly,” demanded NSUI.
“We also demand that any educational institute that does not provide safety to the students should not function unless there are necessary measures taken by the institute. Still we are shocked that the school was functioning without taking proper measures,” said NSUI.
The NSUI has demanded immediate action by government, Health and Education Department in this matter and have this prevention of vector borne diseases exercise near schools all over Goa. “If the government fails to do so NSUI will take law in its hand and not allow schools to function until the safety audits are completed,” he said.
