MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Monday has called for mandatory FDA certification for the fish imported from other states at the border checkposts.
The MLA has demanded all-Goan committee at SGPDA Fish Market in Fatorda.
Addressing a press conference, he said, “The chemical, which is used to preserve dead bodies, is used to lace fish”.
Churchill alleged that a trader named Moulana Ibrahim is involved in manipulation of fish markets and committees.
“Ibrahim is handling all fish markets in Goa. We have to stop him (Ibrahim). If we have a wholesale trade in Goa run by Goans then there is no need for fish from other states. If fish continues to be imported from other states then such things will continue,” he warned.
He quoted a Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital report which ranked Goa as the leading state in the number of cancer cases, but added that he was not essentially linking the cancer cases to the fish.
Claiming that Ibrahim was with Digambar Kamat when the latter was Chief Minister, Churchill recalled of having complained to Digambar about Ibrahim in the past.
Churchill alleged that the committee is of non-Goans and Goans are not allowed to take part in the affairs.
