MARGAO: Listing a slew of demands to make the road from Margao to Colva more user-friendly, locals from the Benaulim constituency have urged the authorities to implement their suggestions while expanding the road. The demands included the proper installation of streetlights and road markings/cat-eyes to make it safer for commuters, especially at night.

“Parking of big buses/trucks on the sides of the road should not be allowed, especially at night. Drivers and cleaners will use the immediate vicinity for various undesirable purposes – as a public toilet, to bathe, to wash their utensils. Besides dirtying the place, this will also cause a traffic hazard,” they stated.

“Illegal constructions and illegal businesses by the roadside must be removed. In the past, workers have managed to build shanties, and nobody has bothered to remove them. Occupants of these shanties, including small children, cross the road in the middle of traffic with the potential to cause accidents due to sudden braking,” they added. They also demanded that footpaths should be usable and be kept free of vendors, beggars and drunken tourists.  They also opposed benches on the footpaths, as they lead to anti-social activities.
