PANJIM: Alleging arrogance of male RTO inspectors towards women applicants for driving licence, NGO Hope Foundation has demanded that lady inspectors should be assigned this task.
The NGO has addressed a letter to Department of Transport informing about how women applicants for licence are put to inconvenience and embarrassment while undergoing the mandatory driving test.
Andrea Pereira of the NGO has said, “We would be able to bring to your notice the specific instances where women were forced to face rude or uncivilised behaviour by inspector or fellow men applicants. But rather than restricting the issue to solve it on case-to-case, on a larger canvass, we would suggest that RTO should amend its system so that these kinds of problems are arrested.”
She demanded that one lady inspector should be mandated to undertake the licence test of female applicants for two and four-wheelers. “Like in Police Department, lady officer is mandatory to probe any case related to woman; similar system should be adopted in Transport Department as protecting dignity of women is a constitutional obligation of your office too,” she stated.
If the department has shortage of women inspector, the NGO stated, the department should make a stop gap arrangement by allotting specific timing for women applicants.
