PORVORIM: Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado has stated that the Fisheries Department has undertaken the extension work of Malim jetty by 50 metres at a cost of Rs 3.04 crore.
“The extension work of 30 metres has already been completed and work on the remaining 20 metres will be completed shortly. Considering the work load at the Malim jetty, the Fisheries Department has decided to extend the jetty by another 67 metres,” said Furtado during his visit to Malim jetty.
Furtado further informed that there had been a demand from trawler owners to upgrade infrastructure at Maim jetty. “The government plans to construct a new auction shed at Malim jetty at a cost of Rs 6 crore,” added Furtado.
Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte remarked that the extension work of the Malim jetty was going on at a very slow pace.
“Presently, over 300 trawlers are operating from the Malim jetty and there is not enough space to anchor these trawlers. I had requested the fisheries minister to visit Malim jetty to bring the problems of the trawler owners to the notice of the Fisheries Department,” informed Khaunte.
“Furtado has assured to look into the grievances of trawler owners and upgrade the infrastructure at Malim jetty as early as possible,” said Khaunte.
