VASCO: A group of councillors from Mormugao Municipal Council on Monday pointed out that corruption and malpractices in distribution and supply of essential commodities are taking place in the port town.
“People are being charged exorbitant prices on grocery items during difficult times of lockdown,” they claimed. The councillors urged the Chief Minister to intervene and keep strict vigil on such activities.

Speaking to media, Mormugao Municipal Council Councillor Dhanpal Swami alleged that although some councillors are trying to provide their ward people with the essential commodities, but in this distribution of commodities also there is some sort of politics taking place.
“Nobody, but Deputy Collector, Chief Officer and Mamletdar are supporting us. People don’t have money to buy essential goods due to lockdown. Some are selling goods worth Rs 40 to an exorbitant price of Rs 100 and 200. And no action has been initiated in this regard. We are not getting essentials to supply to the identified shops from our ward then what we are suppose to do,” Swami questioned.
He revealed that he is receiving numerous calls, messages from his ward people questioning his authority and capacity to fulfil their demands in times of crisis.
Swami opined that there should not be any type of politics done during this testing time and everyone should work to serve people.
Councillor Saifullah Khan said the shops identified to provide essential items do not get supply from the wholesalers. So how they are supposed to cater to the people.
“It is observed that wholesalers are involved in selling goods separately. People are complaining that the police at the check post are allowing these commodities to enter State after taking money, CM should keep strict vigil on this and take action on such malpractices,” Khan added.
