In a tragic incident that occurred in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on November 3, a man and four of his friends were apprehended by the police on Saturday for allegedly raping and subsequently murdering the man’s sister. The incident transpired in the jurisdiction of Chakapad police station.
The distressing episode unfolded when the 25-year-old woman discovered her brother’s illicit relationship with his sister-in-law. Upon learning about the affair, she confronted her brother, urging him to terminate the relationship and warning him that she would disclose the matter to others.
In an attempt to silence her, the brother devised a sinister plan, according to the police. On the fateful day, the woman went to a nearby forest to collect Siali leaves, where her elder brother was tending to his cows. Taking advantage of the situation, he summoned four friends to the forest, where they consumed alcohol and, under its influence, took turns assaulting her.
Resisting the assault, the woman fought back, prompting the assailants to strangle her. Tragically, they also attacked her with an axe, resulting in her immediate demise, as detailed by Lalit Mohan Sagar, the inspector-in-charge of Chakapad police station.
To complicate matters, the brother reported his sister as missing to the police on November 6. Subsequently, the woman’s decomposed body was discovered in the forest on November 7. The post-mortem examination revealed that she had been subjected to sexual assault by multiple perpetrators before succumbing to the heinous crime.The police are further investigating the incident.
