MARGAO: The Colva police on Thursday arrested Jafrey Fernandes as a ‘preventive measure’, after he circulated a video defaming former Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao. Fernandes was booked under Section 151 of the CrPC.
The Colva police received an application filed by Churchill Alemao from Varca, alleging that Fernandes was defaming him with claims that he was involved in accepting money for the construction of the cracked portion of the Benaulim bridge. The police summoned Jafrey for an inquiry, during which he admitted to creating a video and circulating it on his Facebook page.
According to the police, during the proceedings, Jafrey displayed rude behaviour and engaged in arguments with locals, which led to his arrest. Police also discovered that Jafrey resides in the same locality in Varca, raising concerns about the potential commission of cognizable offenses and disturbances to peace and tranquility in the area. The Colva police subsequently placed him under arrest.
