Man dies,2 others escape as tree crashes

A 50-year-old man from Haldanwadi-Mayem died while two others had a lucky escape when a large tree got uprooted due to strong winds and fell on a motorcycle at Ardhawada-Mayem on Tuesday night.
The incident took place at about 8.45 pm when Digambar Hoble was proceeding on his Activa Scooter (GA-04-2859).
A huge mango tree came crashing down on Hoble trapping him at the site. Locals rushed to his rescue and managed to shift him to Asilo Hospital in Mapusa, where he breathed his last.
The tree narrowly missed falling on two persons who were passing along the same road.
Meanwhile, many trees got uprooted in Mayem causing damage to several houses.
In Bicholim city, many trees came crashing down on compound walls and houses. At Gaonkarwado-Bicholim, a house belonging to one Jayashri Naik was damaged after a tree feel on her house.
Bicholim fire officials were kept on their toes as they were seen clearing roads and engaged in rescue operation in several parts. Electricity poles also came down in many places. Many parts of Bicholim taluka suffered due to this natural calamity.
The gutsy winds also hit Keri and Paryem villages. Sattari taluka was also affected as trees were uprooted in several places.
