A 77-year-old man was injured while other family members had a lucky escape when a coconut tree fell on their house at Agonda on Friday night.
According to reports, strong winds brought down a coconut tree on a residential house at Dessai-wada, Agonda at about 10 pm.
Xavier Fernandes (77), who was asleep on a cot in a room, was reportedly battered with debris of falling roof-tiles and other wooden pieces. Fernandes reportedly suffered injuries on his head and legs.
Other inmates, including his wife were watching television in another room at the time, and escaped unhurt. They cried for help and neighbours shifted the injured Fernandes to Canacona Community Health Centre.
The house was badly damaged and the loss is estimated at over Rs 50,000.
On Saturday morning, fire service personnel along with Sarpanch Jovi Fernandes, Deputy Sarpanch Gulshan Guru Bandekar and some locals helped clear the debris and removed the fallen coconut tree.
Sources also informed that immediate financial assistance was also reportedly given by panchayat to help defray the restoration work of the house, while others helped in covering the damaged portions of the house.
