VALPOI: A picnicker drowned in a river after he jumped into the water to escape honeybee attack in the interiors of Valpoi (at Movacho Guno) on Tuesday.
According to police, a group of 15 employees of a private company had gone for a picnic to the bank of a river at Movacho Guno, on Tuesday.
Incidentally, one of the picnickers was throwing stones into the water for amusement, but one such stone accidently hit a honeycomb stirring thousands of bees which began attacking the picnickers.
To escape the bee attack Shamrao More, 60, a resident of Sonal in Sattari jumped into the water, but drowned.
More was rushed to Community Health Centre at Valpoi by a 108 ambulance, where the doctor on duty declared him brought dead.
Besides, three other members of the group who suffered several stings from honeybees have been referred to Goa Medical College and Hospital. The victims are identified as Madhu Gaonkar, 27, a resident of Advoi; Shripad Gaonkar 33, from Mauxi; and Atmaram Raut, 24, from Sal Bicholim.
Others who suffered honeybee sting are Pravin Rane (44) a resident of Keri; Gurudas (45), Prakash Gadkari (56), a resident of Dharbandora; Rushiraj More (17), a resident of Sonal who is a son of the deceased, and the Shivlo Zarmekar (59) a resident of Velus in Sattari.
The Valpoi Police conducted panchanama and registered the case as the unnatural death; the body has been sent for post mortem at Goa Medical College, Bambolim.
Upset at the tragic death, the Sonal villagers have vowed not to allow picnickers at Movacho Guno, henceforth.
