VASCO: One person was killed while four others were injured when the car they were travelling in, collided with another car at Birla Cross junction on Wednesday morning.
According to the police, the incident occurred at around 5.30 am when Mayur Naik, the driver of Maruti A Star car, and his father were returning to Panjim after dropping one of their family members at Dabolim Airport.
On reaching Birla Cross junction, Mayur Naik missed to take left turn towards Panjim due to thick fog and wrongly came on the main Panjim-Margao road. At the same time one Maruti 800 car with five occupants (all members of a single from Quepem) were travelling to Old Goa for the morning mass. These two cars collided with each other, resulting in injuries to all five occupants of the Maruti 800 car. However, the occupants of Maruti A Star escaped without injuries.
One Rocky D’Cunha (71), who was sitting next to the driver in the ill-fated Maruti 800 car suffered grievous injuries and died before reaching hospital. The remaining four occupants were taken to GMC at Bambolim where they are undergoing treatment.
Police have booked an offence against accused Mayur Naik and PSI Raghoba Kamat is investigating the case.
