PONDA: The price of Mancurad mango has dropped to Rs 600 per dozen from Rs 2000 last month. The drastic fall has given aam aadmi access to the ‘king of mangoes’ which has flooded the markets in Ponda.
The vendors say that warm temperatures in the last two months has forced the fall in prices and consumers are rushing in the market to buy the Goan variety.
Baskets full of Mancurad and other variety of mangoes were available in plenty around the Ponda market and village streets as well as also at bypass roads in Ponda.
In April good quality of Mankurad was sold at Rs 2000 per dozen but since the crop has increased, the price was gradually reduced. However, now with a large production, the rates of good quality mango have gradually reduced to Rs 1000, later to Rs 800 and today the price is Rs 600 per dozen. The small sized Mankurad are sold between Rs 300, 400 and Rs 500.
The sudden rains along with increase in arrivals have resulted in the rate coming down said vendors. Though several varieties of mango fruits are for sale in market the taste of the Goan Mancurad is unique and most preferred fruit among Goans.
