Mandopa pollution: P’yat, BMC vow to clear garbage, revive rivulet

MARGAO: Following its coverage in O Heraldo, the Navelim village panchayat has pledged to take immediate action in clearing the garbage that has accumulated in the Mandopa rivulet. Navelim’s Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) has also expressed concern regarding the issue and plans to raise awareness among the citizens.

Despite local citizens, environmentalists, and later O Heraldo drawing attention to the problem, both the panchayat and BMC were previously unaware of the Mandopa rivulet being choked with large amounts of plastic and styrofoam.

Sarpanch Lucia Carvalho, newly elected to the Navelim panchayat, assured that they would promptly address the issue. However, she

expressed surprise that nobody had brought

the matter to her attention earlier.

Carvalho stated, “The panchayat will take definitive action and ensure that the garbage accumulated at the Mandopa Bridge is cleared.”

Chairman of the BMC, Priya Almeida, acknowledged the importance of the River Sal tributary and said that the committee would engage with the authorities to revive and rejuvenate the waterbody.

In the meantime, the residents of Mandopa expressed their shock and disappointment over the lack of action by the authorities.

Carmo Carneiro voiced the residents’ frustration, stating, “The deplorable condition of the Mandopa rivulet persists even on Friday. A large quantity of waste remains stuck at the bridge, and it will undoubtedly find its way into the river if not immediately cleared.”
