Mandrem MLA raises alarm over abandoned stone quarries

PORVORIM: Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar on Tuesday raised the issue of abandoned stone quarries, which had become death traps to tourists and students and demanded to barricade them.

Making zero hour mention in the Legislative Assembly, Arolkar said that a number of locals, tourists and students visit these abandoned water-filled quarries after seeing alluring photographs posted on social media and are becoming death traps.

He said that in the past unfortunate tragedies have occurred at some of the quarries and urged the government to initiate measures to restrict entry of tourists and students at such places during weekends.

The Chief Minister appealed to students and tourists to refrain from visiting water-filled quarries even as attempts are on to erect warning sign boards and barricade them. He said that the government has already taken steps but it is becoming difficult to barricade umpteen numbers of abandoned quarries.
