PANJIM: The incessant rains that lashed Goa last week have carried ore from the uncovered mining dumps into the Selaulim reservoir shooting up the manganese content in the raw water by almost 5 times. And the result: Restricted water supply from Selaulim to Salcete and Mormugao yet again.
Selaulim water, which is the life blood for South Goa, has seen its manganese content rise by almost five times beyond the permissible limit of 0.3 mg per litre touching 2.8 mg per litre.
Speaking to Herald, PWD Executive Engineer S R Paranjape said that chemicals like lime and alum have been used to reduce the manganese content as per the recommendation of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
