MARGAO: Agitated residents of Manora in Raia village marched to the office of superintending engineer, PWD water supply at Fatorda, to protest against the delay in re-erecting a gate on a service road to prevent its misuse by anti-socials.
The residents have set an eight day deadline on the PWD to close the road or face protests. Agitated residents gheraoed superintending engineer Dhond outside his office after he gave an audience only to a three-member delegation led by Anthony Fernandes.
The delegation impressed upon Dhond to close down the service road by re-erecting the gate, saying that the road is being used by anti-socials. They alleged that the road is being used for the purpose of prostitution and demanded its immediate closure.
Anthony later told the media that the residents will not sit quite if the PWD fails to close the service road immediately. “We suspect that the road is being opened to give access to a school at Nuvem. We are opposed to the road which was built as a service road for the water pipeline”, he said.
Dhond, when contacted, said the service road was opened to facilitate JICA to carry out the ongoing works. He has promised to call a meeting of representatives of all agencies to take a call on the issue”, he said, adding that a solution would be found out within the next few days.
