Manoshobha Kalaghar to host 4-day Sanjeev Prabhudesaazi Kalotsav from May 10

The Kalagar dedicated to development of art, culture and education will be launched at the hands of three veteran theatre personalities; unique project to be made available for seminars, meeting, workshops and conferences, besides literary and cultural activities

CANACONA: A 4-day Sanjeev Prabhudesai Kalotsav will be hosted from May 10 at Manoshobha Kalaghar at Loliem in Canacona.

Briefing media persons about this programme, Sandesh Prabhudessai, his sister Sandhya Kamat and theatre director Ketan Jadhav disclosed that Manoshobha Kalaghar is situated amidst the orchard or kulaghar of Sandesh and Sandhya’ parents, Manohar and Shobha Prabhudessai, who were well known freedom fighters and eminent artistes too.

Manoshobha Kalaghar is a giant size open stage nestled in the shade of coconut and betel nut palms besides another stage with a canopy or mattov.

Sanjeev Prabhudesai Kalotsav will launch this unique stage setting with three Marathi and one Hindi plays at 6 pm every day. Incidentally, the programme is named after the deceased son of the Prabhudessai couple.

Dr Rajay Pawar, Principal of Kala Academy’s Goa College of Theatre Arts, Prakash Acharya, eminent writer-director, and Sunita Gaunekar, a theatre personality will inaugurate the Kalaghar.

Incidentally, Ms Gaunekar along with late Mrs Prabhudessai were instrumental in breaking the then prevailing practice of males acting as females on stage as women appearing on stage was considered to be taboo. They appeared together in the play titled ‘Ekach Pyala’.

Besides, during the inauguration of the Kalaghar or house of theatre, many artistes who acted in the Prabhudessai couple’s drama troupe will be felicitated.

The plays to be staged are ‘Amar Amruta’ written by late Vijaykumar Naik and directed by Sainand Volvoikar on May 10 . Shivpranav Allavani will perform his ‘Kelluritil Natak’ which is a solo performed play on May 11. ‘Boro’, a Hindi drama written by Satish Tandle and directed by Ketan Jadhav will be presented on May 12 and the festival will conclude on May 13 with ‘Hayvadan’, written and presented by Abhishek Dukhande, depicted through Chitrakathi form of theatre. 

The programme which is free for all theatre lovers, will be an annual affair declared the Prabudessai siblings.
