PERNEM: The shortage of manpower at the Pernem Municipality has forced the 10 labourers hired by the civic body on a contract basis to carry out multitasking.
Currently, the municipality has 10 labourers hired on contract basis, however due to shortage of labourers these 10 workers have to multitask and cover the entire municipal area. They regularly clean the areas and collect the door-to-door waste as well.
There are around 1500 houses in the municipal jurisdiction and each household is provided with two bins – one for dry and the other for wet waste. However, due to shortage of workers, municipality is failing to carry out the door-to-door garbage collection on a daily basis.
Sources informed that due to staff shortage, door-to-door garbage is collected only from 3 wards on a daily basis while the garbage in remaining seven wards is collected on alternate days. These 10 labourers are overburdened with work as they have to clean the municipal area, fish and vegetable market, gardens and collect the door to door garbage.
Around 600 kg of waste is generated every day in the municipal jurisdiction and around 800 kg is generated on weekly market day. Around 60 kg dry waste is collected every day and 540 kg of wet waste which is further dumped at the plant located on Pernem Plateau.
Municipality officials informed that they have already informed DMA on the staff shortage. However, hiring of workers on contact basis has stopped as the municipality is not financially sound.
