PONDA: A 57-year-old pedestrian, Anand Dharma from Mharvapaz-Ponda, diead tragically on Thursday. Dharma’s head got severed from his torso after he was crushed to death by a speeding truck.
Police stated that Dharma was walking along the road at around 1.30 pm when the speeding truck knocked him down at Khursakade Usgao.
“The sight was so gory that the neck of the victim was crushed under the wheels of the heavy vehicle, while the decapitated head was dragged around 1.5 km away and was lying by the roadside near the MRF factory,” said an eyewitness.
The truck driver Dhanna Hiranath Jogi, 66, resident of Udaipur Rajastan who was proceeding towards Mollem, fled from the scene of tragedy, took a U turn and parked his vehicle at Usgao.
The Ponda police however traced the accused and detained him after checking CCTV footages.
It may be recalled that this is the second horrific fatal accident in the taluka after a motorcycle pilot was crushed to death under the wheels of a crane at the KTC Bus Stand.
Seven horrific accidents in a month leave Pondaites shocked
PONDA: With seven fatal accidents reported from May 20 to June 20, in Ponda, the shocked locals have now questioned the officials over road safety here.
“The roads need to be improved in order to prevent accidents. Visibility on the precarious slopes is poor,” stated a resident.
Khandepar locals alleged that the PWD had abruptly stopped work on the four-lane road and the area has turned into an accident prone zone.
Sandeep Parkar, a local resident stated that the four-lane widening has to go on till Usgao from Khandepar.
Vasudev Gaude, another resident stated that most of accidents occur at Khursakade Usgao as
speeding drivers moving from Ponda towards Usgao end up getting confused at this spot.
“The government should continue the widening of four lane road at this spot to avoid traffic chaos and accidents,”opined Gaude.
