CALANGUTE: It was an unexpected Christmas gift for locals and tourists
as the Calangute panchayat repaired a number of bad roads in Calangute
on the eve of Christmas.
Workers were seen attending to the bad roads and patching the potholes
on a war-footing in different parts of the coastal village, much to the relief
of the tourists and residents.
“The roads that were damaged during the ongoing sewage works and they
needed immediate repairs before Christmas. Our contractor undertook a
survey and began the works from Monday and completed the road repair
work on Christmas ever, as we need proper roads for the festive week,
said Calangute Panch and de factor panchayat head Joseph Sequeira.
“There have been many accidents of late due to potholed roads which
could have been worse during the peak tourism season. The residents and
tourists would then have blamed the Calangute Panchayat for the bad
roads.”
“Our contractor inspected the road leading to St Joseph’s School but the
sewage work by the JICA is still going on and so, nothing can be done to
open the road before Christmas.  The closed road will have its effect on
smooth movement of traffic during peak season.”
“We have opened the road from Hotel La Calypso to Baga Bridge by
getting the work done by our contractor. We would have completed the
road work much before had we been informed by the government bodies
that they are unable to carry out the repair works,” added Sequeira.
