MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has taken an initiative to clear all the illegal huts (slum) from the jurisdiction of the municipality. On Monday, a team of municipal staff along with team of Mapusa police cleared the structures which had illegally come up near Mapusa bus stand and Bodgini area. These structures had come up illegally where some huts had even managed to get electricity supply.
However with rising number of migrants in the locality, in last few days, residents of Mapusa had raised concern overt their safety. They assume migrants are possibly involved in thefts, chain snatching incident, which are in rise in past few months.

These people who mostly belong to the labor category were living and moving around in the jurisdiction of Mapusa without any verification.
“Number of migrants is staying illegally in huts near the bus stand and Bodgini area. We don’t know whether these migrants are beggars or thieves. Chain snatching and theft incident have also taken rise in Mapusa. The concern authorities should stay vigilant and act against such activities,” said Sudesh Hasotikar a resident of Mapusa.
Hundreds of people had to demolish their structures who claimed to be residing there for almost 15 years.
There are similar such spots in Mapusa including Karaswada and Cunchelim area.
When contacted, vice-chairperson of MMC Chandrashekhar Benkar said, “Within next two to three days, all the illegal slums will be cleared from the jurisdiction of Mapusa Municipality. At present, municipal staff along with Mapusa police are clearing illegal structures (slums) near Mapusa bus stand and Bodgini area. After this, other areas including from Cunchelim will be cleared.”
