PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has issued pre-monsoon work orders to de-silt drains and gutters in Mapusa town.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari said last year, Mapusa market was flooded during rains, due to which shopkeepers and vendors suffered losses.
“The affected people had blamed MMC for failing to carry out proper pre-monsoon works. Hence, MMC has decided to take up de-silting works of drains and gutters well ahead of monsoon to avoid flooding of market and roads in rains,” said Falari.
He further said MMC has issued three work orders each of Rs 5 lakh to de-silt all the gutters and drains in 15 wards of MMC.
“The labourers will do the work manually wherever possible, else machines will be deployed for de-silting purpose. I have instructed the contractor to first take up the work of de-silting of drains and gutters which are at higher altitude, followed by drains and gutters at lower altitude,” he informed.
“Last year, the de-silting of gutters and drains in the jurisdiction of Mapusa town was done first and later de-silting work of the gutters of and drains at higher altitude. This resulted in filling of the gutters and drains at lower altitude by the time the work of de-silting of the gutters and gutters at higher altitude started. The de-silting work will be completed by May 20, much before the onset of monsoon,” added Falari.
