Mapusa civic chief resigns

Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sudhir Kandolker has resigned from the post to make way for another councillor to take charge of the council.

PORVORIM: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sudhir Kandolker has resigned from the post to make way for another councillor to take charge of the council.

Kandolker addressed a press conference to announce his resignation as MMC chairperson and to highlight the developmental works initiated by him during his tenure of 15 months.

“MMC has been sanctioned Rs 26.85 crore for developmental works under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission,” he informed.

Kandolker further informed that when he took over as chairperson, the financial condition of the council was very weak. “However, I managed to get funds to the tune of Rs 4.8 crore from the government,” he said.

“MMC spent Rs 30 lakh to renovate the Chacha Nehru Park, Rs 25 lakh to renovate the taxi stand, while Rs 1 crore was spent to purchase vehicles like garbage compactor, JCB, night soil tanker, trucks and Rs 40 lakh towards installation of organic waste converter and OWC sheds,” he added.

Kandolker said the work of new fish market is nearing completion and the entire complex will be ready within the next 2/3 months. The beautification of Mapusa town will be carried out by Goa State Urban Development Agency by spending Rs 25 crore.

“The renovation work of St Mary building has already started and it is being carried out of the Golden Jubilee funds of Rs 2 crore received from the government. The construction work of the vegetable shed has been tendered and it will be completed within next six months,” said Kandolker.

“Through Town and Country Planning, an area of 10 lakh sq mtrs is being acquired to construct Ravindra Bhavan and other facilities. The financial position of MMC is now sound and there is deposit of Rs 7.80 crore in the banks.
