Mapusa Council’s move to hike petrol allowance for supervisors draws flak

Chairperson justifies move; resolution tabled to transfer civic workers to various wards opposed

MAPUSA: Resolutions to hike the petrol allowance of supervisors and to transfer municipal workers to different wards generated much heat at the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) ordinary meeting.

Chairperson Priya Mishal, argued, “A supervisor plays an important role in keeping watch over municipal workers. They make sure that the waste collected by the municipal workers from each ward is disposed of properly. Sometimes they have to pay surprise visits to different wards and so the council has decided to hike the petrol allowance for the supervisors.”

Councillor Prakash Bhivshet strongly opposed the resolution and suggested appointing a different supervisor instead of raising the allowance. Pointing to the negligence of sanitation workers, Councillor Sudhir Kandolkar said, “There are only two sanitation workers appointed in my ward to clean the area. Many times they only show up for the namesake.”

Kandolkar pointed out that ward no19 is part of the municipal market which has led to a rise in commercial activities in the respective ward. “That is why more garbage is generated in this ward,” he added.

A resolution tabled to transfer municipal workers to different wards was opposed by councillor Ashirwad Khojurvekar.

“If the sanitation workers are transferred every now and then, then the ward councillors will have to spend more time in showing the new workers the places which require cleaning. It is not feasible,” he said.

MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar was also present for the meeting.
