MAPUSA: Minister for Arts and Culture Govind Gawade has assured to develop the municipal library located in the old Mapusa Municipal Council building in nine months period.
During his visit, in presence of Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Ryan Braganza, Councillor TusharTople, Central Library Officer Carlos Fernandes and Librarian Sulaksha Kulmule, the minister assured to develop the old municipality building as district library.
The minister further informed that the temporary provision for the library will be soon worked out and by April 1 the facility will be opened for public use.
It may be recalled that in September 2019, Mapusa Municipal Council has resolved to handover the building to Art and Culture Department to set up district library since the building was in depilated condition.
The Athaide Library was closed by the municipal in September 2019 and since then the Mapusa locals are without a library facility.
Meanwhile, MLA Joshua informed that the renovation work of the old heritage municipality building is estimated to be Rs 8 crore.
He said that renovation work of other heritage buildings in Mapusa will be also undertaken.
