Mapusa Fire Brigade, animal rescuers team up to save cow trapped in drain

Mapusa: The Mapusa Fire Services team and the animal rescue team joined hands to rescue a cow which fell into the drain. The unfortunate incident occurred when the bovine inadvertently fell into an open gutter near the Carvalho petrol pump, owing to a damaged manhole cover.

The coordinated effort lasted for two hours, after which the Mapusa Fire Brigade, and dedicated animal activists successfully rescued the distressed animal.

Mapusa fire personnel said upon receiving a distress call at 6.45 pm on Monday, promptly arrived at the scene to find a cow wedged in a narrow gutter, making its removal extremely challenging. However, it wasn’t easy to rescue the cow as the pit was too narrow. Fortunately, they spotted a passing JCB, which they employed to free the stuck cow. The animal was finally rescued from its precarious predicament with care.

Local residents who witnessed the incident expressed their concern and urged the Mapusa municipality to take the matter seriously and close all open gutters which pose a danger to pedestrians and animals alike.

Animal rescuers expressed their sadness at owners allowing the cattle to stray into the Mapusa town. They believed that such incidents indicate a lack of desire by some individuals to care for these animals. Instead, they urged people to hand over any unwanted cows to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) that specialize in animal welfare.
