MAPUSA: A delegation of fish vendors from the Mapusa Municipal fish market on Monday met Mapusa Municipal Council Chief Officer Clen Madeira and presented their grievances.

During their meet with the CO, President of Fish Vendors Association Shashikala Govekar alleged that the vendors are harassed by the municipal staff by not allowing them (vendors) to carry out business in the market. Govekar complained that the municipal staff allegedly stops the vendors from selling fish by sitting on the floor and instructs them to remove their stock.

She claimed that over 50 years they have been carrying out fish business in Mapusa where they bring their catch of fresh fish and some from the wholesale vendors. But due to space constraints, the vendors are forced to sit on the floor and carry out business.

“We, Niz Goenkars, are stopped from carrying out business in the market by sitting along the road. We had initially asked the municipality to take action in this regard. However, since no action was taken, the fish vendors on Monday approached the chief officer,” she said.

Meanwhile, Madeira said, “Fish vendors’ leader Shashikala approached me with their grievances with regards to municipal staff. I have assured her to look into the matter and take necessary action. I have also instructed her to maintain discipline in the fish market and not to squat on the floor and carry out business. I have directed them to carry out business in the slots allotted for them and maintain cleanliness and hygiene.”
