PORVORIM: Director of Municipal Administration Elvis Gomes on Friday said the use of plastic bags puts heavy pressure on municipal councils in their efforts to collect and dispose off the plastic waste.
Gomes was speaking at the Mapusa fish market after launching the circulation of cloth bags at a function organized by Bodgeswar Self Help Group in coordination with the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
“Plastic not only chokes gutters and drains, but it creates health hazards when it is burnt. Hence, people should stop using plastic bags,” said Gomes.
“Bodgeswar Self Help and Mapusa fish vendors deserve to be lauded for launching cloth bags and stopping the usage of plastic bags,” he said.
MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari thanked the fish vendors for taking the initiative to do away with plastic bags. “If this exercise becomes successful, I propose to extend it to the vegetable vendors and merchants in the market,” added Falari.
“The new market is nearing completion and it will be ready within next two months,” said Falari.
MMC Chief Officer Hanumant Torasker and Bank of Baroda, Mapusa branch, Manager Venkatesh Kunkolienkar also spoke.
Leader of Bodgeshwar Self Group Shashikala Govekar welcomed the gathering, while Celsa Antao compered the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
