Mapusa furniture traders seek legal advice against ‘grey trade’

MAPUSA: The All Goa Furniture Manufacturers and Traders Association has decided to seek legal advice if no action is taken against the ‘grey trade’ in the city where furniture and other household items are being sold without adhering to norms.
The association members met Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Clen Madeira on Tuesday to follow up on the issue. A week ago, they had a meeting with MMC officials and submitted a memorandum requesting the MMC not to allow the traditional stalls at the fair during the Milagres feast to operate for more than three days.
Association President Paresh Raikar told reporters that the chief officer has told them that till the council meeting does not take place he would not be able to initiate any action due to the model code of conduct.
“When there are already licenced traders in the market, the MMC cannot grant temporary permissions for erection of temporary stalls. We have asked the chief officer to give the association in writing that a meeting will be held after the Code of Conduct ends so that accordingly the association can decide its future course of action,” Raikar said.
“We are very hopeful that the Council will take a favourable decision to safeguard the interest of the licenced municipal traders carrying out business in the market,” he added.
