MAPUSA: Visitors to the Mapusa municipal market are greeted by presence of litter and discarded food waste at various entry and exit points, particularly at the fish and vegetable markets. In addition, stagnant and filthy water accumulates in drainage pits surrounding the fish market, emitting a repugnant odor rendering the area unhygienic and footpaths not usable.
The lack of waste receptacles, and unwillingness of vendors to utilize the ones available, contributes to the widespread practice of open dumping. This disregard for proper waste disposal also creates a conducive environment for mosquito breeding, particularly after a spell of rain showers. The situation grows worse during the weekly market on Friday when footfall is at its peak.
Outside the fish market, in corners where fish cleaning takes place, the accumulation of waste and stagnant water has transformed the area into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Concerned shopkeepers and visitors have voiced their apprehensions about health risks and have criticized the municipal authorities for neglecting the market’s cleanliness.
A visitor to the fish market expressed dismay stating, “The unhygienic state of the market, particularly around the fish market area, with open drains and stagnant water outside, not only causes a foul stench but also fosters mosquito breeding. Garbage is haphazardly strewn in open areas. Despite the daily influx of hundreds of visitors, the municipality has regrettably fallen short in upholding proper hygiene standards within the market.”
The prevailing unsanitary conditions not only tarnish the market’s image but also pose serious health hazards.
