Mapusa market to get a ladies’ toilet

MAPUSA: With constant complaints and pleas from the Mapusa vendors and locals, the request for constructing a ladies’ toilet at Mapusa Municipal market was finally been heard. After nearly two years, Mapusa Market will get a new ladies’ toilet on priority this year.

Pointing out that merchants, workers, and the general public are affected due to the lack of proper toilets and sanitation facilities, the foundation stone of the ladies’ toilet was laid on Tuesday morning at Mapusa. The toilet is expected to be completed within three months under CSR.

“We have noticed that in the past 2 years, the shopkeepers, vendors and the locals were unable to access the toilet facility as it was closed. Under CSR, the work has been officially started and this project will be completed within three months,” MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal said.

Mapusa market already has of two toilets, one located near the fish market and the other is located near the bus stand. For the women vendors and locals, the toilet in the market will be closer. The presently abandoned women’s toilet will be demolished and rebuilt into a functional toilet.

“In every meeting that we had with the municipality the issue of construction of a public toilet in the market was always there. The workers and vendors face a huge problem, especially the women workers. Finally, the Mapusa Municipality has taken the decision to reconstruct the ladies’ toilet,” said Siddhesh Raut, Secretary of Merchant Association.
