MAPUSA, JAN 10
Mapusa merchants are up in arms over the unhygienic and disorderly situation at Mapusa market.
The merchants have accused the fruit vendors of dumping rotten fruits in the market itself, which in turn emits foul smell all over the place. The place has also turned into a breeding site for mosquitoes.
A petition highlighting the grievances has been sent to the health authorities requesting them to look into the unhygienic situation prevailing in the market.
In another memorandum to the Chief Officer of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), the merchants have complained that the fruit vendors have also obstructed public access by dumping wooden boxes in the open passages. Some of them have even trespassed on footpaths, they added.
Demanding free access in the market, the merchants have requested the MMC to clear the fruit vendors and other hawkers at the entrance of the market, in order to ease the traffic congestion.
