Mapusa Merchants submits Memo to CP over shops rent hike, gives 8 days to revoke

In a bid to address concerns over a proposed hike in shop rents, members of the Mapusa Merchants Association engaged in a crucial meeting with the Chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council. The association voiced their collective opposition to the rent increase, citing its potential adverse impact on their businesses.

During the meeting, representatives from the Mapusa Merchants Association conveyed that the suggested rise in shop rents is deemed unfavourable for their economic sustainability. They articulated the challenges faced by businesses, especially in the current economic climate, and highlighted the potential ramifications of such a rent hike.

In a decisive move, the association has granted an eight-day window for the Municipal Council to reconsider the decision. Failing a favourable resolution within this timeframe, the merchants have issued a stern warning: they will be compelled to take the drastic step of closing down the market in protest.

The proposed rent increase has stirred a wave of concern and urgency within the Mapusa business community, with merchants seeking a collaborative and amicable resolution with the municipal authorities. The next week will undoubtedly prove critical in determining the course of action, as both parties navigate discussions and negotiations to strike a balance between the interests of the merchants and the municipal administration.
