Mapusa: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), Mapusa MLA and staff paid tribute to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi and second Prime minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri on occasion of their birth anniversary.
A few municipal workers were also felicitated on the occasion where MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza addressed the gathering and complimented the municipal workforce for their work, especially during the pandemic.
Thereafter, the MLA Joshua Dsouza, MMC Chief Officer Kabir Shirgaonkar, Chairperson, councillors and staff took up a cleanliness drive at Mapusa bus stand.
Elsewhere, in North Goa, there were functions held at the panchayat levels where the MLAs were also present for the cleanliness drives.
Responding to various issues that are being discussed in the constituency, Joshua first highlighted the benefits of the proposed Mapusa bus stand against the backdrop of criticism aimed at the project.
“It is not a waste of money because it’s something that we are going to use. A bus stand in Mapusa is the need of the hour and standard work will be carried out. At present the land acquired is in a shabby condition. This will act as temporary relief. Municipal elections are coming closer so everyone wants to show relevance,” said Joshua.
Speaking about the road conditions in Mapusa, Joshua said, “Major road re servicing, hot mixing was carried out before monsoon. There was a pre-monsoon plan of two and half crore for internal roads in the municipal jurisdiction. Unfortunately due to COVID, this plan remained on hold. Few roads in Mapusa are in bad condition but we will try to tender the project by November end.
He also spoke about the Cunchelim ground issue.
“Protests against Cunchelim ground seems like an activity for political mileage. Everybody goes there just to be seen there but nobody is actually interested in the problems of the people. This particular project has permission from the PDA and Municipality. There is a football ground but there is no cricket ground as such. This is a planned model that they are going with. If there are any illegalities, then I am with the people”, he added.
