MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar, Vice Chairman Sushant Harmalkar and Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza inspected the Mapusa vegetable market on Thursday and addressed a slew of pressing issues raised by the local vegetable vendors. The vendors expressed their frustration over the lack of maintenance in the market, citing several ongoing problems.
The vendors reported that broken bulbs have not been replaced and non-functional fans have been left unattended for several months, creating an uncomfortable environment for both vendors and customers. Additionally, they highlighted the severe waterlogging that occurs during monsoon, exacerbated by leaking roofs. This situation poses a significant risk to the vendors’ livelihoods, especially with the heavy rains approaching, they complained.
Mapusa Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar acknowledged the grievances and assured the vendors that their concerns would be addressed promptly. Vice Chairman Sushant Harmalkar emphasised the importance of maintaining the market infrastructure to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for all.
MLA Joshua D’Souza echoed these sentiments, pledging to oversee the necessary repairs and improvements.
The vendors have urged the Mapusa municipal council to prioritise the maintenance work before the onset of heavy rains, to prevent further deterioration of the market conditions and to safeguard their businesses. The Mapusa municipal council has committed to taking swift action to resolve these issues and improve the overall market environment.
As the monsoon season approaches, the vendors and customers are hopeful that the promised interventions will be implemented swiftly.
