PORVORIM: The Mapusa Nagrikancho Ekvott (MNE) has complained to Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) about rampant and uncontrolled digging of streets in the city, which has caused hardship to the citizens.
In a complaint to MMC, MNE Convenor Adv Antonio Lobo has requested MMC to urgently carry out some repairs at least at the points where digging is done to provide the citizens relief from dust that is raised due to constant flow of traffic over the dug roads.
“The dust has affected the health of the citizens who have been affected with colds, asthmatic attacks and other illnesses,” said Lobo.
“The works are being carried out by the open trench method. This was not envisaged by the JICA programme and the works were supposed to be carried out by trenchless method.”
“This city continues to reel under clouds of dust which have covered and discoloured everything including the houses painted for Christmas and the repaired portion of the street resembles waves. This type of work should never have been allowed before Christmas,” said Lobo.
MNE has warned MMC that if it fails to carry out, at the least, the closing of the portions dug up and which are the sources of dust pollution, Association will take such measures as it deems fit to put an end or at the least to get some relief from the ongoing nightmare.
MNE has also sent a letter to Deputy Chief Minister and Mapusa MLA Francis D’Souza in this regard.
When contacted, MMC Chairman Sandeep Falari said he had got in touch with the contractor and has convened a meeting with him next week to initiate measures to curb dust pollution in the city.
