Mapusa-Siolim road in darkness

The Ganeshpuri Housing Board road at Mapusa leading to Siolim, which serves as shortcut for motorists to reach their respective destinations, has no streetlights installed and many accidents have taken place along the route

The Ganeshpuri Housing Board road at Mapusa leading to Siolim is one of the busiest roads. Commuters from Pernem, Siolim, Morjim and other areas commute along this road to travel to Mapusa , Panjim or any other places and vice versa. But the fact is that the stretch has no streetlights installed and many accidents have taken place along the route.
During night time, there have been instances wherein commuters have fallen asleep while driving and rammed their vehicles into the trees.  With no streetlights installed along the route, motorists find it difficult to spot the stray animals at night. This road serves as shortcut for motorists to reach their respective destinations.
The daily commuters have raised their concern that criminals can take undue advantage of the dark surroundings especially at night to commit crimes.
A few months ago a message had gone viral on WhatsApp which mentioned that a group of people sit near the garbage dump in the area and loot commuters after 8.30 pm. However, no such incident has been reported till date at the police stations.
When Herald contacted the Mapusa Police, the police said that till now they have not received any complaint of such incidents but informed that they have started patrolling the area.  Since some part of the area comes under the Anjuna police jurisdiction, the police there too informed that no such incidents have been reported as yet.
The MMC has its garbage treatment plant installed here and some of its workers work at the plant.
While, the electricity department has recently installed some street lights at starting point from Siolim and at the end point of the housing board but commuters claimed that the streetlights should be installed along the entire stretch.
A daily commuter Salil Naik said, “The electricity department has installed only 4 LED lights that too just at the starting point of the slope from Siolim. They should install streetlights along the whole stretch.”
