MAPUSA: The Mapusa Merchants Association led by its President Ashish Shirodkar met with MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza to place before him the issues plaguing the municipal market on Thursday.
Basic sanitation facility, street illumination at night, parking for vehicles of merchants, encroachment of vendors, door-to-door garbage collection, prostitution, gang of robbers and child beggars were the issues the merchants demanded urgent attention on.
“We hope that the chairperson cooperates with us to bring josh in the Mapusa market and also take up the works on a positive note. He has also assured us to utilize the Rs 20 crore allocated for Mapusa which is a good signal that the works assured by the chief minister are currently in progress,” Shirodkar said.
The merchants also highlighted the plight of more than 50 vendors selling spices, food items without FDA licence and have been given trade license by the MMC. They tagged this as illegal and demanded a clarification from the municipality.
The merchants also suggested the MMC chief to maintain a grievance file of Mapusa market for the next chairperson to use as a reference in case he failed to deliver.
Braganza assured the merchants that he would ensure basic sanitation facility in the market at the earliest. He has assured the delegation that the potholed roads in the market creating a nuisance for the senior citizens would be covered up latest by February end.
Regarding the anti-social activities going on in Mapusa market such as prostitution, pick pocketing and menace by the beggars, he assured to write to the Mapusa PI to tackle the same.
