Mapusa vendors asked to clear stalls at night for emergency services access

Mapusa: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has ordered the vendors from the municipal market to carry their goods back to their home at the end of the day so that emergency services can be available in the interior parts of the market 24/7. Sellers from Bardez, Pernem, Sawantwadi and South Goa who come to Mapusa market, take their stuff back at night and clear the road.

However, the stall owners who have been doing business in the central part of the market wrap up their materials and leave it behind at the end of the business day. The stall owners include fruit sellers, vegetable vendors, footwear sellers etc.

“As per the Mapusa Municipality Act, the vendors have been instructed to keep the roads clear at night for emergency services,” said MMC deputy chairperson Viraj Fadke.

Meanwhile, vendors said that it is not feasible to transport back the goods everyday. “The stalls and shops built while expanding the Mapusa market should be given to the vendors at reasonable rates,” said one of the vendors.
