Mapusa vendors protest as MMC tries to close main entrance to fish market

MAPUSA: Fish vendors from the Mapusa Municipal market on Monday protested after the MMC staff allegedly tried to close the main entrance of the market.

Protesting vendors said they would not  allow anyone to touch the main gate as it would since would hamper their business.

“People visit the market from the main entrance and our business has been adversely affected as people have started selling fish by the road side and highways and closing the main gate will make more problems for us,” they said.

President of Fish Vendors Association Shashikala  Govekar said that MMC had not had any discussions with them before taking this abrupt decision.

“The earlier council use to take the vendors into confidence before taking any decision  but this time we have been sidelined,” Govekar said and charged that the MMC should evict people selling fish by the road side and highway.

Vendors further pointed that they are already facing inconvenience in the absence of proper toilets, water and lights within the market.
