Mapusa vendors want MMC to lower hiked sopo

MAPUSA: Vendors from Mapusa vegetable market on Tuesday marched to the office of Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal, demanding reduction in the sopo (sitting fees).

They said that it is not feasible for them to pay the hiked sopo. Vegetable vendors pointed out that earlier they were charged a sopo of Rs 50 however now the fee is hiked to Rs 90, which is not possible for them to pay.

According to MMC calculation, the sopo amount works out to around Rs 67 however vendors have been asked to pay Rs 90.

Additionally, there are other vegetable vendors who do business by sitting outside the vegetable market. As a result vendors sitting in the market lose customers.

Vendors therefore requested the Chairperson to reduce the sopo as their business is suffering. They said that they are ready to pay around Rs 60 as sopo.

After the discussion, chairperson of MMC told vendors to give their representation and said it would be put before the council.
