Marathi lovers hold hunger strike to press for demand

VASCO: The Marathi protagonists under the banner of ‘Marathi Rajya Bhasha Samiti (MRBS), Goa, along with Mormugao unit of Shiv Sena on Wednesday staged day long hunger strike demanding official language status to Marathi, near Joshi circle in Vasco.

MRBS also demanded that the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar should pass a legislation on this demand during the forthcoming monsoon assembly session.
At least 50 members affiliated to MRBS Vasco unit participated in the day long hunger strike.
MRBS member Sashikant Sardessai told reporters that, “During the last assembly elections, the BJP had promised to make Marathi an official language of Goa. However, they failed to fulfil the promise; therefore, the members of MRBS would teach the BJP a lesson in the forthcoming assembly elections.”
However, if the BJP “fulfils our demands before the elections, then, we all would ensure that the BJP gets 25 or more seats in the forthcoming elections,” he said.
Archana Kochrekar, another MRBS member, said, “We have no issues with Konkani. However, we only want that the State government to fulfil our demands.”
