PONDA: Peeved with the fact that they have to rush to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim, even to avail treatment for basic ailments, Marcaim locals have urged that the Primary Health Centre (PHC) here be upgraded on priority.

Sarpanch Shailendra Panajikar stated that the Health Centre caters to patients from Marcaim and surrounding areas of Mardol and Ponda besides catering to the needs of the workers employed at the two Industrial Estates at Marcaim and Kundaim.

“There is a shortage of staff at the PHC. Patients are admitted here but immediatly shifted to the GMC due to the lack of medical facilities. The panchayat has been constantly following up the issue of upgradation with the authrorities,” said Panajikar.

It is learnt that around four doctors render their services here with over 150 patients visiting the OPD everyday.

Meanwhile, Sandesh Naik, a resident said that the panchayat should ask the industrial units at Marcaim and Kundaim to contribute from their CSR funds for the upgradration of the PHC.
