The Sattari Itihas Sanvardhan Samiti (SISS) marched to the Nanus fort on Republic Day, to commemorate freedom fighter Deepaji Rane’s agitation against the Portuguese using the Nanus fort at Valpoi as a base camp on January 26, 1852.
“The SISS organised the ‘Chalo Nanus Killa’ on January 26. Deepaji Rane, an illustrious son of Sattari taluka, had declared first agitation against Portuguse rule in 1852 and used Nanus fort at Valpoi as base camp,” SISS coordinator Advocate Shivaji Dessai told Herald. “Hence, January 26 is also considered a milestone in Goa’s freedom struggle,” he added.
The citizens were addressed by prominent personalities, including environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar, at the VMC stage in Valpoi.
