MARGAO: The anti-encroachment drive by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) continued on Wednesday with the civic body’s market team clearing all illegal vendors, especially those selling vegetables, fruits and fish on the roadside in various parts of the town.
MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira and some councillors have been personally monitoring these drives which are being carried out in the interest of the consumers and following complaints by vendors who pay fees to operate from the markets in Margao and Fatorda.
“Today’s raid was at the wholesale fish market road where we seized fish. Then there was a raid on the roads near Ravindra Bhavan and also near the Fatorda stadium where we seized sweet corn. We also cleared a road near the railway overbridge in Mungul where we seized tender coconuts and fruits,” said MMC market inspector Santo Fernandes.
He informed that some of the fruits and fish were given to orphanages, the Lar De Santa Terezinha in Pajifond and Matruchaya Ashram at Sonsoddo.
Fernandes added that they also removed illegal banners that were put up near a chapel at Mungul as part of their raids.
“These raids which began last week will continue,” he added.
