Margao civic body begins ferrying inert and RDF from Sonsoddo to Karnataka

The HC has directed the Margao Municipal Council to present a timeline within which the proper disposal of the garbage remediation byproducts should be completed

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council has resumed the transportation of inert and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from the Sonsoddo dump yard to a cement factory in Karnataka. Many trucks with the capacity of carrying huge loads were observed at the site on Wednesday, loading the byproducts generated by the remediation to be transported outside the State.

Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council, said, “Other works, including the construction of a tank to store leachate, and a compound wall, are in full swing. The civic body will ensure that leachate does not flow into the gutters nor will waste be littered on the road during the monsoon.”

On Monday, when the matter was heard before the High Court, MMC had submitted their road map concerning resolving the Sonsoddo legacy waste. However, the court had also asked the civic body to present a timeline for the same. Thousands of tonnes of inert and RDF were left at the site as there was no takers for the same, even after the Goa Waste Management Corporation completed the remediation of the legacy dump. After being pulled up by the court, the civic body has started to expedite the works.

Savio Coutinho, on behalf of a group of citizens of Margao, has written a letter to Levinson Martins, Managing Director of GWMC, requesting intimation of the schedule for officials’ meetings to be held pursuant to the High Court order. “The registrar calls upon us to raise our issue at the meeting of officials which you were assigned to hold as per the order dated April 6. Upon being informed that a meeting was already held on March 20, you are requested to kindly intimate us about any further meetings to

be held by you in this regard,” he stated.
