MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday cracked the whip against the illegal businesses operating on the roadside around the Wholesale Fish Market in Madel, and seized goods worth thousands of rupees.
Market inspector Santu Fernandes said that several vendors were seen hawking their wares on the roadside, and obstructing traffic in
the process.
“We have seized fruits and vegetables from the vendors and have warned them of strict action if found at the site again,” said Fernandes.
Apart from the vendors selling fruits and vegetables, one can witness even fish and plastic goods being sold on the roadside on the busy stretch. “The whole stretch of road from the KTC Bus Stand to the Western Bypass junction at the border of Seraulim village has turned into an illegal market, wherein several migrants are noticed engaged in doing quick business,” said Freddy Dias from Seraulim.
He demanded that the Municipality carry out eviction drives against illegal hawkers here, on a regular basis. Such sporadic action should not be just an eyewash activity; the civic body needs to be serious about cracking down on illegal vendors and improving access for commuters,” he added.
